I don't know whose idea it was to demolish the fives courts.
That was a great sin and an insult to Dr Hayman who financed
it. Great shame. Trinity was the other school to have a Fives court.

Very true as we had our palms seasoned to catch the leather ball by playing fives.

I benefitted a lot from it for my fielding and reflexes.

Had we not done away with them we would have continued to produce good catchers of the leather ball as a good fielding side can demoralize any good batting side.

Dear All,
Mevan is very correct. and batting at times was with a wicket.
it helped Hockey too as some used to dribble rubber ball.
time to reintroduce but first the boarder population must be increased for fives to thrive.

It was indeed a despicable act to have destroyed the fives courts which was the cradle in which cricketers developed strong palms to catch the leather, quick reflexes and fielding skills, and indeed batting skills as well, apart from being a bit of history. Fives courts made the difference between STC and most other schools.
If I remember right all runs had to be scored as twos, fours and sixes. There were no singles and running between stumps. Only a set of stumps stood drawn on the shorter concrete wall towards the class rooms. 2 runs for a shot along the ground that struck the wall in front below the wooden horizontal panel.4 runs if it struck the same wall full and six if it cleared the batting end wall off the front wall, and six and out for a shot that cleared the front wall, the ball to be recovered from the sick room.
STC Mt L will never be the same without the fives courts.
