Default Essay competition for students in the Middle and Upper schools including coll Forms.

Closing date for submitting of essays further extended up to end of term two 2021 in order to facilitate more students to participate and to offer more prizes.

The Warden had given permission and approval to conduct an essay competition for students in the Middle and Upper schools including the Coll Forms through the Sinhala, English and Tamil literary societies.
Teachers in charge of the three societies will have to conduct the essay competition and select the best seven essays each, for the three languages, for which laptop computers will be given as the prizes. Also there will be nine more special prizes to show gratitude for their dedication of service. Students will have to write an essay on any one of the following teachers of their choice who have served the literary societies as master in charge or as debating or oratorical contest judges.
Essay should be of minimum one side of an A4 sheet but not more than two sides of an A4 sheet and could be done from home with the assistance from parents and teachers.
The idea of this competition is for the students to be given an opportunity to own a laptop computer whilst learning about the past teachers who have served the literary societies well and performed as judges at debates and oratorical contests.

Sinhala Medium prizes will be awarded in honour of the following teachers.

1. C S Weerasinghe prize donated by an old Thomian.
2. D S Jayasekera prize donated by Gemunu Wijesundera.
3. Arisen Ahubudu prize donated by Dr Rohana Hattotuwa.
4. G L Jinadasa prize donated by Mr Mohan Abeynaike.
5. Prof Vini Vitharana prize donated by Mr Mahesh Mallawaarchchi.
6. G K Mandawala prize donated by Dr Eswaran Velaudapillai.
7. P M Jayakody prize donated by K I Dharmawardena.

English Medium prizes will be awarded in honour of the following teachers.

8. R F A Mendis prize donated by Mr Ronnie Peiris.
9. D.N. Pereira prize donated by Dr R D Guneratne.
10. E F C Pereira prize donated by Mr Lasath Lecamwarsam.
11. E N Devadason prize donated by Mr R Arulanantham.

We need your assistance to purchase the twenty one laptop computers for the winners to be given as prizes. In this regard a quotation received from Abbas Ltd is given below.

A novel project that will provide students with laptop computers in this time of virtual learning via zoom etc has been launched with the approval of the Warden S.Thomas' College, for students of STC Mt. Lavinia.

In addition, the project will help students learn about the teachers who in a different era inculcated great values that led many Thomians to future success. The project will have the Thomian Sinhala, English and Tamil literary societies,
conduct an essay competition and select the best seven essays each, for the three languages, for which laptop computers will be given as the prizes. Students will have to write an essay on any one of the named past teachers of their choice, who have served the literary societies as master in-charge or as debating or oratorical contest judges.

Sinhala Medium prizes will be awarded in honour of past teachers such as C. S. Weerasinghe, D. S. Jayasekera and Arisen Ahubudu. English Medium prizes will be awarded in honour R. F. A Mendis, D.N. Pereira, Mrs.Gwen Dias Abeysinghe and others.

For each language, seven winners will be chosen and awarded laptop computers as prizes in honour of the above mentioned teachers who have served the school well, as a mark of gratitude and respect towards them.

The organizers need the assistance of old Thomians and other well wishers to purchase the twenty one laptop computers to be given as prizes to the winners.

The Sinhala, English, and Tamil literary societies will conduct an essay competition for students in the Middle and Upper schools in honour of a number of distinguished past teachers.

Initiated by Mr Sriyan Jayasekara, the competition will involve students writing an essay on any one of the teachers mentioned below who have served the literary societies as master in charge or as debating or oratorical contest judges. The winners of the competition stand the chance to win a laptop.

The idea of this competition is for the students to be given an opportunity to own a laptop computer whilst learning about the past teachers who have served the literary societies and performed as judges at debates and oratorical contests.

The respective teachers in charge of the three societies will conduct the competition and select the best seven essays each, for the three languages. The essays will be on a topic that will challenge both your writing skills and also your ability to research into the contributions made by teachers at S. Thomas' College who have, in their time, served the activities of the Literary Societies at School.
Students in the Middle and Upper Schools and also in the College Forms are eligible to take part, and you will need to compose your essay to fill two sides of an A4 sized sheet of paper; the minimum length will be one side of an A4 sized sheet.
Participants are encouraged to select a teacher by name and then conduct adequate research on the contribution of that particular teacher, during his or her tenure as a Teacher at STC. All of the names (listed below) are of ones who fostered the activities of the Sinhala, Tamil and English literary societies and also encouraged Thomians in Debating and Oratorical competitions. All students who enter this essay competition can write their piece at home and may have the support of teachers and parents in finding out the necessary details as would inform your essays.

In Sinhala, the following are the names of teachers of whom you may choose to write your essay:
