STC cautiously ventures into the ?New Normal?

S. Thomas? College started the process of reopening its doors to its beloved students yesterday, after a hiatus of more than 3 months, due to the prevailing Coronavirus pandemic.

Reopening is happening in multiple phases, with the first phase focusing on students sitting for O-Level and A-Level exams this year. The ?School by the Sea? will gradually extend its welcome to a larger portion of the student population within the coming weeks. This process of reopening college for students is based on the guidelines issued by the Ministry of Education, the Old Thomians Health Professionals Association (OTHPA), a professional body of the Old Boy?s Association of STC, comprising of Medical doctors from various specialties and allied healthcare professionals conversant with controlling the spread of virus infections. The College has done its best to provide a robust and comprehensive plan to safeguard the health of our staff and students.

Even during the lockdown, our teachers, working from home with very limited teaching resources, effectively served the educational needs of our students, via online classes and remote learning platforms as well as with study packs, distributed through our communications app, Akura. STC used platforms such as Zoom and Google Classrooms to provide online learning for students in all Forms from Lower III to the College Forms. Online sessions were conducted for Nursery and Primary School students too, but these were more for the purpose of keeping the boys connected with their teachers and to be engaged in fun and creative activities than to cover syllabi.

Apart from academic teaching, STC also conducted basic fitness programs and physical wellbeing sessions for the general student population as well as more specialized drill, training and fitness programs for the sportsmen, covering 23 sports and over 900 students in total. This was carried out with the help of some of our sports coaches and physical training instructors.

Services of the College counseling teams were also made available to students to help them overcome a very challenging period of their lives.

In keeping with the traditions of STC, the Warden, Rev?d Marc Bilimoria and his team of administrators, academic and sports staff have done a remarkable job in keeping the students engaged and enriching their minds, bodies and spirits, in spite of facing what has been a very challenging time in the lives of all people everywhere.

Below is a link to an interview of our Warden where he goes on to describe more details on the challenges faced and how he and his team worked together to overcome them during the lockdown period.
