RM was a very popular and friendly guy and recollect his fighting knock of 42 runs at the Royal Thomian in 1960 with his captain Lareef Idroos to save the match. Interestingly I witnessed a match against St. Josephs at Mt. Lavinia when he was batting and received a very loose ball from Priya Perera as the ball had slipped out of the bowler's hands and went high up. The bowler knelt down with his hands on his head looking at the umpire. RM positioned himself for a big hit only to miss it and also surprisingly get bowled. He later told me that the Coach F.C de Saram thereafter at all practices had someone bowl loose full tosses for him to hit. Eddie His mortal remains lie at No.186,Angulana Station Road, Moratuwa. The Funeral Service will be held at St. Matthias' Church Laxapathiya off Angulana Station Road) today, Tuesday June 30th at 4.pm, Ven. He was a man of a few words and a decent ,respectful .unassuming guy.I never heard him say a bad word about any one whether he was a friend or foe.He was very quiet in the dressing room but when he strode out to the middle to bat he gave his best for the team.He never threw this wicket away.He batted with style ,grace and concentration. He played many useful innings for the team. One of his best innings was in the Royal Thomian match in 1960, the year I captained the Thomian team. His invaluable innings prevented the Royalists from winning..This was one of the best innings he played in this very crucial game. After I left school in 1960 our paths did not cross very often. He lived in Moratuwa and he seldom came to Colombo.my contact with him was on the cricket field .He played for the Moratuwa Cricket team with distinction and I Played for the University of Ceylon team from 1962 to 1967 in the Sara Trophy tournament. I do remember the match the University team played against the Moratuwa team at the Thurstan Road grounds.R.M was a distinguished member of that team. Our team was placed in a good position till R.M.walked into bat and he played a stubborn innings for his team and almost prevented us from winning. I knew that the match was not won till we got R.M. out. Fortunately for our team I got a hat trick and R.M was one of my victims when he was bowled round the legs to a googly. and we went on to win the game.R.M. was a fighter and never gave up.He made us toil for his wicket . We have a lost a great cricketer and team man and a good friend. On behalf of my cricket team I want to convey our heart felt condolences to his wife and children.May he rest in peace.Bye R.M. We will miss you. Dr Lareef Idroos Last edited by sriyanj; 08-07-20 at 09:32 AM. |
