Subject: STCML OBA COVID-19 Emergency Student Scholarship Fund

19 th June, 2020

Dear Fellow Thomians,

?Times of great turmoil have always brought out the best in the Thomian make up...?

During this time of COVID-19 related uncertainty, I thank you for everything that you have done and continue to do, in support of The School and the Thomian Family.

The College has been shut since mid-March this year due to COVID-19. However, since April, the College and its teachers have continued to serve the educational and developmental needs of its students via online classes and remote learning platforms. These sessions have mainly focused on academia, but with limitations, have also involved physical exercises and sports training.

?The horror of COVID-19, this dreaded struggle into which the world has been plunged, has clouded what for us would have been a year of steady undisturbed progress??

The COVID-19 crisis has impacted the livelihoods of people and families globally. Sri Lanka is no exception, with our main foreign revenue earning sectors; Tourism, Apparel Exports, and Foreign Employment badly affected. Local Industries have also suffered. A significant number of parents of young Thomians, unfortunately, work in the aforementioned sectors and have, therefore, been affected. In addition to the sudden reduction/loss of income, the incremental costs associated with online education (devices, data etc.) are adding further strain on these households. Over the past month alone, the School has seen a significant rise in the number of parents seeking assistance with paying their School Fees. There are several steps that are being taken to counter this situation. The OBA/STCML has undertaken to support and drive several of these initiatives which include:

Removing frictions to payment of school fees through online and banking platforms
STC administration accommodating the term fees as monthly payments
STC administration sending out reminders and letters to parents to stimulate payment
STC administration reopening the college office counters from 1st June onwards, to facilitate physical payment of school fees (weekdays Monday to Friday)
OBA support in granting moratoriums through partnerships with Banks
OBA creating a communication campaign to strengthen stakeholder ties and build affinity towards the college.

Despite all of this, however, the harsh reality remains that given the unfavorable conditions currently in operation and anticipated over the months to come, parents of many students will be unable to pay their school fees.

On the 2nd of May, The Warden made an appeal to the Old Boy Fraternity and a number of old boys have already stepped forward to contribute towards one or more causes mentioned therein. In order to further assist the College to overcome the burden of such a large default in school fees, the STCML OBA wishes to urgently collect sponsorships from the old boy fraternity, spanning from 1st June to 31st August 2020. This COVID-19 Emergency Student Scholarship Fund will support the most deserving students over the Trinity Term. The income generated through this initiative will enable the continuous payment of salaries to teachers and staff. Despite the strain on finances, the College has continued to pay, in full, the salaries of all its staff members.

A rigorous process will be followed when awarding these need-based scholarships to deserving students. Parents who have defaulted in their obligation towards paying school fees and who are unable to respond favorably to the fee collection procedures of College, due to the current crisis, will be scrutinized. All parents who apply for relief under the aforementioned Fund will be required to provide information about their family income and details of how they have been impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic. The fee collection officers of the school will work closely with these parents in order to determine their demonstrated need. This information will be reviewed by a panel comprising officers from the school and the two STCML OBA representatives on the Board of Governors. Accordingly, the most deserving students, whose parents have a well demonstrated need, will be selected as recipients of a 3month scholarship exclusively for the Trinity Term.

?We all love the old school, and are proud of it. Here?s a chance to prove our affection in something more than words and fine feelings??

Your support in making a contribution towards these students, will undoubtedly have a lasting impact on the lives of these young Gentlemen and their families. It will also assist The School in its endeavor to carry out unabated, the main task of providing a sound, all rounded, education to its students during these trying times. We kindly request for your generous contribution towards this cause.
